PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reciprocating compressor in which a suction valve is kept from contact with a cylinder block and a substantially tip of the suction valve is always brought into contact with other members. SOLUTION: The reciprocating compressor is equipped with a cylinder block 3, a cylinder head 7 forming a suction chamber 10 and a discharge chamber 11, a piston 5, a valve plate 6 to which a suction port 6a and discharge port 6b are provided, an elastic suction valve 1 which is provided so as to block the suction port 6a and which communicates between the suction port 6a and the cylinder bore 4 with the tip kept from contact with the valve plate 6 by suction pressure at least, a notched part 30 which is provided to cylinder block 3 so as to make the suction valve 1 elastically transformable and has a specified depth from a part abutting to the valve plate 6, and an elastic member 2 which is provided to the notched part 30 and which has elasticity in the direction of pressing the suction valve 1 onto the valve plate 6 side.
