PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method and a device for monitoring a gain of an optical amplifier, capable of detecting the gain of signal light irrespective of noise light generated in the optical amplifier. SOLUTION: In this device, a part of signal light Lin inputted into an optical amplifier 100 is divided an input monitor light M1 by an optical divider 11, and the input monitor light M1 is modulated by an intensity modulator 13. Also, a part of light outputted from the optical amplifier 100 is divided by an optical divider 15, and the modulated input monitor light and the output monitor light are wave-combined by a wave-combiner 16. Wave-combined light is converted into an electric signal by an optical detector 17, and an interference component included in the electric signal is extracted by a frequency cut filter 18.
