PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic shock absorber such as an oil damper used for isolation of vibration and damping of vibration capable of widening an opening without changing a valve body of a base valve. SOLUTION: In the hydraulic shock absorber, a tank is arranged on the outside of a cylinder 2, a valve body 13 partitioning two liquid chambers is arranged on a bottom 17 side of the cylinder 2, a port 14 interconnecting the two liquid chambers is arranged on the valve body 13, and a check valve 15 is also arranged on an end of an outlet of the port 14 free from opening and closing. In the hydraulic shock absorber forming an opening 16 connecting one liquid chamber to a tank side, the valve body 13 is inserted at a position not interfered with the opening 16 in the cylinder 2, and a fixing means K fixing the valve body 13 on the inner periphery of the cylinder 2 is arranged on a little to a back side rather than the opening 16.
