An electric metallurgical melting furnace, arc furnace or hot metal mixer has one or more longitudinal multi-phase stirring coils 4 below the bottom of the furnace and fed with a very low frequency current, at least one of the stirrers 4 being arranged with its vertical symmetrical plane on one side of the axis or one of the planes of symmetry of the furnace. The coils 4 have magnetic cores. Each stirrer is arranged with its vertical symmetrical plane parallel with the long axis of the furnace and where several stirrers are used they are arranged in this manner on the same or opposite sides of the long axis of the furnace. The stirrers may be arranged in one row or in two parallel rows on opposite sides of said long axis. Several stirrers may be arranged parallel with each other perpendicular to the long axis of the furnace. Each stirrer is movable perpen-' dicular to its vertical symmetrical plane. The phase sequence of the stirrers is reversible and the phase sequence of each stirrer may be changed independently. In the open hearth melting furnace shown in Fig. 4a, the arows denote surface movement of the melt and B denotes the mixing zone where the melt rises to the surface. The phase sequences may be arranged to give a surface movement directing the slag to a discharge opening 2. Thus a single stirrer may be arranged symmetrically below the bottom to obtain better mixing at the bottom of the furnace and then shifted to one side to aid deslagging..</p> |
