PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a contact detecting device without causing a variation in detecting accuracy in an AE sensor. SOLUTION: This contact detecting device is arranged in a machine tool (a cylindrical grinding machine 10) having a workpiece support table (a workpiece table 40) for supporting a workpiece W, and a tool post (a wheel spindle stock 30) for supporting a blade tool (a grinding wheel T) and relatively moving to the workpiece support table 40; and detects contact between the workpiece W and the blade tool T; and has an acoustic emission sensor (the AE sensor) 50 arranged on the tool post 30 side and detecting acoustic emission when the workpiece W contacts with the blade tool T.
