Device to purify blood by dialysis using a blood filter consisting of a blood chamber and a dialysis fluid chamber, separated by a dialysis membrane. Blood circulation is through the blood chamber and a dialysis fluid source passes through a dead-end-filtration unit containing a filter membrane, before passing into the dialysis fluid unit and leaving by a separate exit. Endotoxins are removed by the microfiltration membrane having a pore diameter greater than or equal to 0.22 micrometres. The microfiltration membrane consists of an anionic exchange membrane (preferably basic) enclosed in a dead-end filtration unit. The dialysis unit comprises the blood filter (1), dialysis membrane (2), blood chamber (3), dialysis fluid chamber (4), dialysis fluid source (5), dead-end-filtration unit (6), dialysis fluid exit (7) and filter membrane (8). Using the basic anionic exchange membrane 'Sartobind Q' (RTM), the reduction in endotoxin levels was 90.0-99.9%. |
