PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable telephone set comprising a function for preventing contents of received mail and transmitted mail from being watched by the other person and a function for canceling that function, and a mail display control method. SOLUTION: A control system circuit 104 sorts mail into locked mail and unlocked mail according to user designation and stores the mail in a storage circuit 105 for management. In response to a mail display request, a list of the managed mail is displayed on a display 103 together with their states and in response to a locked mail content display request performed by selective designation on the displayed list of mail, an input request of a password number is displayed on the display 103.
