Apparatus for disinfecting air flowing along a duct in an air conditioning or ventilating system

An apparatus for disinfecting air flowing along a duct 10 in an air conditioning or ventilating system comprising a head portion 12 which is mounted top the outside of the duct 12 and a body portion 13 extending from the head portion and inserted into the duct through an aperture in its side wall. The body portion supports one or more ultraviolet lamps disposed in respective UV-transparent quartz sleeves 17. Means are provided for causing a flow of fluid e.g. air through the sleeves in order to control the temperature of the lamps. The means may comprise a fan unit (37, fig. 4) which is part of a lamp conditioning system to maintain the optimum operating temperature of the lamp which also either heats or cools the air which the fan ventilates the cavity between the sleeve and the lamp with. Cleaning means are provided for each sleeve comprising a cleaning head which is movable axially along its sleeve. Also claimed is a duct containing the disinfecting apparatus and a method of fitting a disinfection apparatus to a duct of an air conditioning or ventilating system.
