In given marginal conditions relating to force to be transmitted, division etc, the material requirements for the plates ( 10 ) of a plate link chain of a variator are minimised by shaping the plate in such a way that the active bending moment in the longitudinal limbs ( 18 ) which are parallel to the moving direction of the plate link chain and/or the transversal limbs ( 20 ) which are perpendicular to the moving direction of the plate link chain is minimal.
