A split rim is rendered air-tight by a resilient deformable sealing ring disposed in a circumferential cavity in the path of possible air leakage between the parts of the rim. As shown, a split rim 20 carrying a tubeless tyre 10 comprises a rim base 21 having a bead-retaining flange 18 and a tapered bead seat 19 on one side and a gutter 24 on the other side, and a removable bead retaining flange 27 with a tapered bead seat 28 held on the rim base 21 by a split locking ring 32 engaged in the gutter 24, the split rim 20 being rendered air-tight by an endless sealing ring 30 housed in an annular space defined by adjacent corners of the gutter 24, removable flange 27 and locking ring 32. As shown in Fig. 6, the contour of the parts defining the sealing ring space is such as to distort the normally circular section of the sealing ring to effect an air-tight seal between the parts. The tubeless tyre 10 may have a lining 15 of butyl and pins 16, 16a extending laterally inwardly from the tyre beads 14, 14a, the fins acting as flutter valves on initial inflation of the tyre to reduce escape of air under the beads. Sealing gaskets 8, 9 of rubber strip may be mounted between the beads 14, 14a and their respective retaining flanges and seat portions of the rim. An inflation valve 37 may be screwed directly into the rim base 21 with or without rubber sealing washers therebetween. In alternative arrangements the fins 16, 16a may be tapered to a thin edge to bear either on the bead seat portions of the rim or on the rim base 21. The tubeless tyre 10 may be provided with a tyre-shaped safety diaphragm which is fitted with a flutter valve and has inextensible beaded edges to seat in and seal with channel seats formed in rubber ledges attached to the axially inner portions of the tyre beads 14, 14a. |
