Apparatus (10) for use in the manufacture of a panel element (1), which comprises spaced apart first and second leaves (2, 3) tied with reinforcing members (5), comprises three casting beds (11) on which the first and second leaves (2, 3) are cast. The first leaves are cast with the reinforcing members (5) extending upwardly therefrom. A first gantry which is carried on an overheard frame (26) of a support structure (20) carries a lifting frame (42) on a hoist (38) for raising the first leaf (2) above an orienting plate (56) carried on a second gantry (45). First leaves (2) lowered by the lifting frame (42) onto the orienting plate (56) are oriented through 180° and lowered onto one of the beds (11) by telescoping rams (53) for casting with a corresponding second leaf (3). Vacuum suction pads (59) secure and retain the first leaf (2) on the carrier plate (56).
