In a process to prepare silage animal feed from a combination of grass or corn (maize) harvested in the early morning , the harvested chopped vegetable matter is rested for half a day. The vegetable matter is then inoculated with lactose acid bacteria, wrapped in airtight bales and allowed to ferment under strictly anaerobic conditions. The packing consists essentially of a multi-layered foil about 170 m thick and sandwiched either side by a layer of polyethylene. At room temperature the maximum oxygen permeability is not greater than 1 cm3> (m2> d bar)-1>. The bale has an aperture that is briefly formed by a punch during the fermentation process and is then closed by a pressure-relief valve. An independent claim is included for a commensurate animal feed. |
