<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize communication in an ultraviolet to infrared wavelength region using an optical transmission line. <P>SOLUTION: Each transmission loss of a plastic optical fiber when dried and at the time of saturation water absorption is measured. The transmission loss P when dried and a transmission loss difference L between at the time of saturation water absorption and when dried are in a wavelength region that satisfies at least one of 0≤L/P1≤1, 0<L≤100, and 0<L+P1≤200 in the wavelength regions of 500 to 720 nm and 785 to 810 nm. In the ultraviolet to infrared wavelength region, a vibration absorption wavelength of a hydroxyl group of water included in the plastic optical fiber and atomic absorption wavelength x caused by its overtone absorption are detected, and the above condition is a communication region other than x. When the communication region other than x is used as communication wavelength, there is little increase in transmission loss even when the plastic optical fiber absorbs water so that stable and satisfactory communication can be carried out. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
