WATER ABSORBING MATERIAL CONSISTING OF KARAYA GUM, ITS PRODUCING METHOD AND WATER ABSORBING ARTICLE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water absorbing material which is produced by a simple and easy method and has biodegradability, high safety, excellent absorbency and moderate gel strength and to provide a method for producing the water absorbing material and a water absorbing article containing the water absorbing material. SOLUTION: This water absorbing material contains karaya gum heat-treated at≥120°C and≤180°C as a principal component. This water absorbing material has preferably such performance that the amount of 0.9 mass% sodium chloride aqueous solution to be absorbed by this water absorbing material is equal to or higher than twenty times its own weight and the amount of 0.9 mass% sodium chloride aqueous solution to be held in this water absorbing material is equal to or higher than fifteen times its own weight.
