PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a welding method for the purpose of obtaining a weld metal excellent in toughness in the case of welding a steel plate by a large heat input electroslag welding. SOLUTION: In the electroslag welding method, a welding wire is used which contains in mass % 0.02-0.30% C, 0.05-1.80% Si, 0.5-3.5% Mn, 0.005-0.035% Al, 1.0-5.0% Ni, 0.05-2.5% Mo,≤0.05% Ti,≤0.010% N, and≤0.010% O, and which as necessary contains B, Cr, V and Nb, with the balance Fe and inevitable impurities in the composition. Also, in the welding method, a welding flux is used in which the degree of basicity B<SB>LK</SB>shown in following expression (1) is >0.5. B<SB>LK</SB>=6.05[CaO<SP>*</SP>]+6.05[CaF<SB>2</SB><SP>*</SP>]-6.31[SiO<SB>2</SB><SP>*</SP>]-4.97[TiO<SB>2</SB><SP>*</SP>]-0.2[Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB><SP>*</SP>]+4.8[MnO<SP>*</SP>]+4[MgO<SP>*</SP>]+3.4[FeO<SP>*</SP>] (1).
