PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating composition for forming coating film having a gradient composition useful for applications such as coatings, self-adhesives and adhesives. SOLUTION: The coating composition comprises a resin A, a resin B, a compatibilizer C and a solvent D, where the solution consisting of the resin A, the resin B, the compatibilizer C and the solvent D is transparent; the difference in the surface tension between the resin A and the resin B is at least 3 dyn/cm; the compatibilizer C has a weight-average molecular weight of 100-100,000 and a surface tension between those of the resins A and B and a solubility parameter between those of the resins A and B, or a part compatible with the resin A and/or a part compatible with the resin B in the molecule; and the solvent D has a difference in the solubility parameter within a specific range from those of the resins A and B; and the compositional ratio of the resin A and the resin B in the dry coating film formed changes continuously from the film surface in the depth direction.
