In a process for the manufacture of steel "red mud", i.e. the residue from the treatment of bauxite with caustic soda, is added to the converter during refining. The red mud may be added in the dry lumpy state before the addition of molten metal or at any time during the blow preferably in the form of a sinter or as briquettes. The total amount of red mud may be 15 to 50 kgs. per 200 kgs. of metal. The briquettes may include lime or fine iron ore and pitch or tar may be used as a binder.
