A cylindrical core(1) is at least partly wrapped in a silicone material(2). The wrapped cover is 0.1-5mm, preferably 0.3-3mm and in particular 0.7-1.5mm thick. Wrapping(2) on the end face(4) of the cork is thicker than on the flanks(3). The wrapping may comprise two identical half shells positively connected together and bonded onto the core(1) so that it is completely enclosed. Independent claims are included for: (1) a first process for manufacturing the synthetic cork in which: i) a core is manufactured; ii) one end of the core is enclosed in silicone material which is then vulcanized on; iii) the other end of the core is enclosed in silicone material and this is vulcanized onto the core; (2) a second process for manufacturing the cork in which: i) a core is manufactured; ii) half shells of fully vulcanized material are manufactured with dimensions matched to the core; iii) adhesive is applied onto the inner side of a half shell and/or outside of the core; iv) the half shell is applied onto the core; v) stages iii) and iv) are repeated at the other end of the core.
