摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a current constriction type perpendicular energization GMR head assembly by which a sufficient life is assured, a magnetic recording and reproducing device having such a head and a method for specifying the appropriate sense current direction of a current constriction type perpendicular energization GMR head in the current constriction type perpendicular energization GMR head assembly which is a component incorporating a current constriction type perpendicular energization GMR head, the magnetic recording and reproducing device having the head and the method for specifing the appropriate sense current direction of the current constriction type perpendicular energization GMR head. SOLUTION: The current constriction type perpendicular energization GMR head assembly is provided at least with a current control layer having a plurality of truncated cone-like conductors having axes approximately coincident with a current direction and insulators which fill a gap between the plurality of truncated cone-like conductors as a fine structure, the current constriction type perpendicular energization GMR head in which a surface on the side having more bottoms with wider areas of the plurality of truncated cone-like conductors is considered as the first surface of the current control layer and a surface on the side opposite to the first surface is considered as the second surface of the current control layer and the current constriction type perpendicular engization GMR head is provided with a sense current source which supplies a sense current so that the current flows from the second surface to the first surface of the current control layer.
