PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a phosphor that is chemically stable, has a long duration of life and contains no Cd. SOLUTION: The phosphor is represented by the formula (Y<SB>1-x</SB>Ce<SB>x</SB>)Ca<SB>4</SB>O(BO<SB>3</SB>)<SB>3</SB>(0<x<0.6). A method for producing the phosphor comprises a process for weighing starting substances Y<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, CeO<SB>2</SB>, CaCO<SB>3</SB>and B<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, a process for mixing the starting substances to form a mixed material and a process for packing the mixed material into a heat-resistant vessel and firing the mixed material in an air atmosphere to give a fired product.
