A powertrain system (20) is provided that includes a prime mover (22) and a change-gear transmission (24) having an input (42), at least two gear ratios, and an output (44). The powertrain system (20) also includes a power shunt (27) configured to route power applied to the transmission (24) by one of the input (42) and the output (44) to the other one of the input (42) and the output (44). A transmission system and a method for facilitating shifting of a transmission system are also provided.
