The membrane separation stage, in a sewage treatment plant, has a membrane module immersed in a basin with a connected pump leading to an outflow. A control unit sets the operation of the pump electromotor. A liquid store is downstream of the pump, at a higher level, with the free outflow. A non-return valve is in the connecting channel in front of the pump or after it. A bypass bridges the connecting channel section with the pump and non-return valve, with a shut-off valve. The control unit is connected to a pressure sensor, liquid level monitor, the pump motor and/or the shut-off valve.
