PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To well perform rotary drive of a control shaft to a reference position, when a sensor output reference value is learned/stored. SOLUTION: A variable valve system is operated in conjunction with rotation of a crankshaft, drives and opens/closes an intake valve or an exhaust valve, and changes a lift characteristic of the intake valve along with rotation of the control shaft. When an ignition switch is switched to OFF (S11), firstly fuel supply is stopped (S12), and then rotary drive of the control shaft is performed toward the reference position while the crankshaft still has been rotated. When the control shaft reaches the reference position, an output value Vn of the control sensor is stored/learned as a sensor output reference value Vn0 (S18). COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
