PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device which can prevent the temperature of the light emitting tube of the lamp from dropping too much and stably maintain the discharging state of the lamp. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal projector 100 displays images by projecting the light of the lamp 10 to a liquid crystal panel 13 having an optical modulation function. It is provided with an image corrector 4 to generate the illuminance value when displaying images and the illuminance value when inserting black frames into the liquid crystal panel 13, a power controller 6 to generate the power control value for the lamp 10 based on the luminance value generated in the image corrector 4, a temperature detector 11 to detect the temperature of the light emitting tube of the lamp 10, and a cooling fan 7 to cool the lamp 10. The power controller 6 changes the revolution of the cooling fan 7 in accordance with the temperature detected by the temperature detector 11. The power controller 6 makes the lighting frequency higher as the power control value becomes lower, in accordance with the controlling level of the electric power in the lamp 10.
