A shell type needle roller bearing used for the support structure of a compressor spindle and the support structure of a piston pump drive part enabling a further reduction in production cost by securing the product quality of its shell type outer ring by a simple heat treatment not requiring the conditioning of atmosphere for the heat treatment. The material of a steel plate pressed for the shell type outer ring (1) adopts a medium or high carbon steel with a carbon content of 0.3 mass% or higher. Since its carbon content is higher than that of a low carbon structural alloy steel plate and a steel plate for cold rolling/pressing which have been used so far, expensive carburizing/hardening and carbonitriding treatment can be eliminated, and the production cost of the shell type needle roller bearing (A) can be reduced.
