PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which carries a lighting system especially with a fluorescent tube such as a xenon lamp and having an opening, is provided with a reflection means at a part with a strong possibility to become the secondary illumination light of a lamp opening, reduces the generation amount of flare with inexpensive and comparatively simple optical components by positively reflecting illumination light on a reflector, and and prevents the deterioration of read image quality due to uneven density caused by the change of original density without lowering the light intensity of a lamp. SOLUTION: In the image reader with an optical system which reads an original image by illuminating the surface of an original 20 by an illumination lamp 22 and the reflector 23 provided on the opposite side of the illumination lamp 22 to a reading line of the surface of the original 20, guiding reflected light from the original surface which is a reading position, and forming an image on an imaging device 16 by an image forming means 26, it is provided with the reflection means 27, 33 between the illumination lamp 22 and the surface of the original 20.
