PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning unit which does not wear down much of the image forming carrier and is able to remove the foreign matters sticking to the carrier and stably supply toner as a lubricant for the cleaning unit. SOLUTION: A cleaning unit 60 uses a cleaning means 61 to remove the toner and toner additives remaining on the image carrier 10 after it has transferred the toner image formed on it to an intermediate transfer object or recording paper. An auxiliary cleaning means 64 is provided at the upstream side of the cleaning means 61. This auxiliary cleaning means 64 temporarily holds the toner and toner additives still remaining on the image carrier 10 before reaching the cleaning means 61 to make them rubbed by the image carrier 10. Then, it passes the remaining toner and toner additives from the temporal holding part to the image carrier 10 to supply them to the cleaning means 61 at the downstream side.
