The invention provides a cationic carbohydrate polymer having a degree of substitution in the range of from 0.1 to 0.6 and an average molecular weight in the range of from 20 to 4000 kD, and a process for preparing the same. Said carbohydrate polymer can be used as a flocculant for dewatering sludges or removing constituents from solutions. <IMAGE>
