<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for uniformly coating the peripheral face of a roller till both end faces of the roller, with a coating liquid regardless of the shapes of the ends of the roller and without unnecessarily increasing the positional accuracy of the ends of the roller. <P>SOLUTION: Before the roller is coated with the coating liquid, a sensor and a coating head are relatively moved from the protrusion of one end of a core bar to that of the other end in the axial direction of the roller in advance. During the relative movement, a boundary between the protrusion of the one end of the core bar and an elastic layer is detected by the sensor as a first end position.
