1,093,661. Rolling. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. March 9, 1966 [March 9, 1965], No. 9865/65. Heading B3M. The diameter of a tubular workpiece 4 is decreased by passing the workpiece through a rotary ball race 3 while supported by a mandrel 5. The workpiece is electrically heated to an appropriate temperature during working. The race 3 is supported in bearings 7 in a housing 6 and is rotated by a driven gear 9 which meshes with a ring 8 attached to the race. Balls 1, which perform a swaging action on the workpiece, are adjustable axially of the workpiece to permit control of the diameter being rolled. A threaded sleeve 18, which is axially adjustable in a housing extension 23, and a further spring loaded sleeve 19, constrain the balls axially, movement of the sleeve 18 resulting in adjustment of the balls. Tubular inserts 47 house heating elements 48 and insulating layers 59, a further heating element 50 surrounding the mandrel 5. Alternatively, the mandrel can be hollow for the reception of an electrical resistance wire, or to enable a heating fluid to pass through the mandrel.
|
