The opto-electronic system (1) has a housing (3), with a sensor to register the distance to an object (2), with an evaluation unit to process the measurement signals from the sensor which has a light transmitter (5) to give a light beam (4) and a receiver (7) to take the reflected light beam (6) from the object. The evaluation unit has a memory to store the measurement results together with a speech storage memory to take a verbal commentary, with a computer interface (14). The assembly has an input keypad (13, an operating control field (9) and a display.
