PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a modified epoxy resin having cationic polymerization activity, to provide a method for producing the modified epoxy resin, and to obtain a cationic polymerization initiator excellent in cationic polymerization activity. SOLUTION: The modified epoxy resin has a structure in which a side chain hydroxy group of a secondary alcohol structure in the epoxy resin having the secondary alcohol structure is substituted with a group comprising a sulfonyloxy group such as an arylsulfonyloxy group or an alkylsulfonyloxy group, wherein the excellent cationic polymerization activity is originated from the side chain sulfonyloxy group.
