<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a porous metal type catalyst used in a reforming vessel for reforming a hydrocarbon gas, e.g. hydrogen gas, natural gas, methanol and/or coal gas, to a gas rich in hydrogen and carbon monoxide by steam reforming and a supporting material for manufacture of the catalyst. <P>SOLUTION: In the catalyst-supporting material, the metal backbone of the porous metal having a three-dimensional net structure is coated with δ-alumina having spacings d<SB>2</SB>and d<SB>1</SB>of the (040) face of the crystal, determined from positions of the half band width of the diffraction peaks of the (040) face, within a range of 1.920-2.035Å and spacings d<SB>2</SB>and d<SB>1</SB>of the (046) face, determined from positions of the half band width of the X-ray diffraction peaks of the (046) face, within a range of 1.360-1.425Å.
