A water or protein adsorptivity imparting agent that can simultaneously exhibit high adsorption and desorption capabilities. There is provided a water or protein adsorptivity imparting agent comprising a porous silica that has pores of hexagonal structure and exhibits an average pore diameter of 0.8 to 20 nm, an average particle diameter of 50 nm to 100 mum, a specific surface area of 400 to 2000 m<2>/g and a pore volume of 0.1 to 3.0 cm<3>/g. There is further provided a material having water or protein adsorptivity, comprising this adsorptivity imparting agent. Still further, there is provided use of this adsorptivity imparting agent for imparting water or protein adsorptivity in a material selected from the group consisting of a food packaging material; a filtration auxiliary agent; sanitary goods; a composition containing a synthetic resin; a humidity conditioning material; a wound covering material; an insulating base material; a semiconductor device covering material; a cosmetic; an inkjet recording medium; and a composition containing a synthetic fiber.
