The step ladder has a swing step (10) as an extruded light metal profile, between the side bars of the ladder. The step fills the space between the ladder side bars, with a swing axis (34) in a swing bearing mounting (32) for the step at each end. The step profile has a number of adjacent hollow chambers (14,16,18,20,22,24,26,28), separated by ribs (30) at equal intervals.
