PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid electrolyte membrane which is less liable to deteriorate in a strong acid atmosphere and has low methanol crossover properties and a high proton conductivity, an electrolyte composition for obtaining this solid electrolyte membrane, and a solid polymer type fuel cell using this solid electrolyte membrane. SOLUTION: The electrolyte composition comprises a sulfonic acid group-containing polymer having a specific ether structural unit, a benzoxazole structural unit, and an imide structural unit or a benzothiazole structural unit.
