574,226. Knitting. MELLOR, BROMLEY, & CO., Ltd., and SHORTLAND, A. Oct. 4, 1943, No. 16269. [Class 74 (ii)] In knitting upon a machine of the independent needle type selected needles of one set of needles are closed and the yarn is laid upon the needles with closed hooks so that when these needles are moved to knocking-over position the yarn passes over the hooks to the backs of the needles and is not formed into stitches. Pressoff, miss-stitch and purl stitch effects can be so obtained. The invention is described in connection with a cylinder-and-dial machine, having transfer instruments arranged in the needle tricks with the needles in either the cylinder or dial, or both. The latch closing device is in the form of a thin profile cam 5 with a curved or inclined edge 6, which for closing dial needles is mounted close to the dial so as to engage the back of the latches 8 of the needles. Latchopening means for re-opening needles for resumption of knitting comprises a pivoted member 9 having a pointed end for engaging the needle latch. The member 9 is mounted upon a block 10 controlled by a spring 12 so that the member 9 is yieldable. The invention is applicable to latch-needle and bearded-needle machines. Specifications 401,448 and 478,969 are referred to. |
