PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a noise and to improve startability in a high-pressure discharge lamp provided with a discharge tube supporting start up. SOLUTION: This high-pressure discharge lamp lighting device is provided with a chopper circuit 4 rising output voltage of a full wave rectifying circuit 2 to convert into desired direct current voltage, an inverter circuit 10 converting the direct current voltage from the chopper circuit into alternating voltage and supplying ac power to an arc tube 14 of a high-pressure discharge lamp L and an auxiliary discharge tube 17 supporting the start up, an igniter circuit comprising an igniter circuit comprising a step-up transformer 16, a charging/discharging capacitor 18, and a 3 terminal thyristor 19, etc. and generating pulse voltage for starting and lighting, a first control applying a wave form wherein the pulse voltage from the igniter circuit is superimposed on a square wave voltage from the inverter circuit to the high-pressure discharge lamp until the high-pressure discharge lamp is started and lit, and a control part 29 repeating a second control applying only the pulse voltage generated by the igniter circuit to the high-pressure discharge lamp.
