Swelling or dissolving of carrageenan involves treatment with a swelling agent or solvent at 30-100[deg]C in the absence of dissolved mono- or poly- valent metal ions, the swelling agent or solvent containing >=5 wt.% of one or more polyhydric alcohols and >=50 wt.% water.
