The unit has a facing (20) provided on top of a base layer (4), and including an underlay with a decorative layer. Surrounding edges lying at an upper surface of the unit are held in an area of the underlay in a same color dye similar to that of the decorative layer. The surrounding edges are formed of a bevel (22) in the decorative layer. The underlay is made of Kraft papers which are painted in the same color dye. The base layer is made up of wood material such as high density fiberboard (HDF) or medium density fiberboard (MDF). An independent claim is also included for a method of manufacturing a flooring unit.
