PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display which does not affect luminance and resolution of displayed images, even if a color optical modulator and spatial optical modulator are used. SOLUTION: The display system for generating images is the display system, wherein each of the images has arrays of low-resolution pixels having a plurality of high resolution pixels. The system includes the first optical modulator, which has the arrays of the color pixel elements and in which each of the color pixel element is so constituted as to independently modulate the one spectral distribution among the low-resolution pixels and the second optical modulator which has the arrays of the gray scale pixel elements and in which each is so constituted as to independently modulate the gray scales of the high-resolution pixels. The first and second optical modulators are constituted to cooperatively operate, in such a manner that each of the low-resolution pixels includes a plurality of the groups of the high-resolution pixels, respectively having different hues.
