It is possible to effectively extract a word contained in a landscape image imaged by a mobile camera, by using a word dictionary or a map database. Position information acquisition means (101) positions a current position of a device and acquires position information. According to the current position information and the direction information, character string recognition means (104) identifies the imaging range of the landscape image. The character string recognition means (104) extracts information such as a store name, a building name, and a place name corresponding to the position of the imaging range, from a map database (103). The character string recognition means (104) performs character recognition by using word knowledge such as the store name, the building name, and the place name extracted.
