PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recovery device which can recover ink discharge of a recording head by carrying out the optimum operation regardless of a state such as a viscosity of ink, and to provide its method. SOLUTION: A carriage 2 moves to a position where a recording head 1 is opposed to a cap 9 (S1), and the cap 9 covers a nozzle (S2). One program "sequence 1" for the suction operation is read out, and a pump 10 is driven at a predetermined rotating speed for only a predetermined time, whereby the ink is sucked and discharged from the nozzle (S3). A flow rate of the ink flow at this time is measured (S4) and is compared with a preliminarily set setting value (S5). When the measured value is equal to or larger than the setting value, the suction operation is terminated. When the measured value is smaller than the setting value, a program "sequence 1, 2, 3 and so on" for further another suction operation is selected (S6) and executed (S7), whereby the optimum suction operation is completed.
