PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide nonaqueous electrolyte for electric double layer capacitor in which risk of ignition of aprotic organic solvent remaining in a capacitor and leaking to the outside through vaporization is reduced when temperature of the electric double layer capacitor rises abnormally. SOLUTION: In the nonaqueous electrolyte for electric double layer capacitor comprising at least one kind of aprotic organic solvent and supporting electrolyte, compounds having a difference of boiling point of 25°C or below from that of the aprotic organic solvent and having phosphorus and/or nitrogen in a molecule are added to each aprotic organic solvent.
