A stalk is first subjected all over its length to pressure and a pair of forces to thereby flattening and partially opening thereof. Subsequently the stalk is at the same time broken all over its length or predominantly all over its length to thereby shortening woody portion of the already disturbed stalk and releasing said woody portion from greater part from fibers. Apparatus for making the above described process has at least three smooth rollers and at least three rollers having performed therein rectangular radial grooves (D) and rectangular radial projections (V) wherein the width of the groove (D) corresponds to approximately one half of the projection (V) width.
