A communications network comprises a base station 101 with access to an external data source 102, 103 and a plurality of user stations 111-116. Each of the user stations is located within a building and is configured to communicate with the base station via a network interface (202, figure 2) on the outside of the building. The interface receives power from the user station via a cable (203, figure 2) connecting the two, the cable also being used for data transfer. The network interface may be a wireless network interface and may be connected to the user station via a universal serial bus (USB) connection. The external data source may be an internet or broadcast television connection.
