PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine having a switch mechanism with reduced output difference in switching of a valve lift quantity, without impairing effect of improving fuel economy. SOLUTION: A control device for an internal combustion engine comprises: a variable phase mechanism for changing a phase angle of an intake camshaft with respect to a crankshaft; and a variable lift mechanism switching cams different in lift quantity. The intake camshaft has a first cam having a predetermined cam profile, and a second cam whose maximum lift quantity is smaller than that of the first cam and lift opening is narrower than that of the first cam. A phase of the second cam is set on a delay side compared to a phase of the first cam. The control device controls the variable phase mechanism to delay the phase angle of the intake camshaft according to increase in request output of the engine. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
