A control system for an X-ray source (106) includes a sensor interface (108) for receiving one or more sensor signals representative of operation of the X-ray source (106); a programmable controller (102) operative in response to the one or more sensor signals (109) and a sequence of control instructions (103) for generating one or more control signals for controlling the X-ray source (106); and a control interface (104) for supplying the one or more control signals to the X-ray source (106), either directly or indirectly.
