PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize early activation of a catalyst, while maintaining proper drivability. SOLUTION: The catalyst 31 is equipped with an exhaust pipe 24 of an engine 10 for cleaning the exhaust gas. The ECU40 calculates the demanded torque to be generated by combustion of the engine 10, based on the opening degree of an accelerator etc. that a driver operates at the time of dither control of the air/oil ratio. The estimated torque of the threshold lagging ignition, corresponding to the threshold lagging ignition timing in each case, is calculated, in addition to the MBT estimated torque corresponding to the MBT (optimal ignition timing) is calculated in each case. The amplitude quantity of the air/oil ratio in the dither control of the air-oil ratio is calculated, based on the above calculated demanded torque, the MBT estimated torque and the estimated threshold lagging ignition torque.
