The machine has a conveyor (7,8) with a belt (9) for transporting containers in the direction of its longitudinal axis sand rotary rollers (1,2) with an outer surface (5) movable from a neutral position into an identification position in which the containers are disengaged from the conveyor and rotated. The hollow rollers have at least one longitudinal breakthrough (6). At least one conveyor is arranged in each roller and the conveyor belt is arranged near the breakthrough. The rollers and conveyors are mounted separately, whereby the outer surfaces of the rollers overlap the belt in the transport direction when the rollers turn. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a method of handling containers in the lying position, e.g. bottles or cans (B) and a device for handling containers in the lying position, e.g. bottles or cans.
